Studies on the pyroninophilic cells in the lymph nodes during pregnancy in the rat

Abstract
The fetus is regarded as an antigen to mother and induces some immunological responses.
The following experiment is designed to study on the changes of the pyroninophilic cell number during pregnancy in the rat in the lumbar nodes which drain the uterus.
The experimented animals were fifteen Sprague-Dawley female rats which were devided into three groups. The animals were mated with Wistar male rats and each lumbar nodes and popliteal nodes were resected at 10,20 days of gestation.
The lymph nodes were MGP stained and the lymphoblasts and plasma cells were counted in the inner and outer cortex, medullary cords, respectively. Then the results were compared with the virgin control groups.
The results are following
1. In the inner cortex, the changes in number of the lymphoblasts shows increase between group I and III in both the lumbar nodes and the popliteal nodes.
2. In the outer cortex, the changes in number of the lymphoblasts shows significant increase between group I and II, and between group I and III in the lumbar nodes and there is some increasing tendency in popliteal nodes, but it is not significant.
3. In the medullary cords, the changes in number of the plasma cells show significant increase between group I and II, and between group I and III in both the lumbar nodes and the popliteal nodes.
These results suggest that the fetus affected as an antigen to the mother.
